The pharmaceutical industry, a part of the so-called life sciences, is essentially concerned with the research, development, production, testing and distribution of a wide variety of medicines. With a turnover of over 40 billion euros and more than 130,000 employees (2018), the pharmaceutical industry is an important economic factor and job engine in Germany. The 600 or so pharmaceutical companies registered in Germany are among the most sought-after employers with a high demand for skilled workers.

We have compiled the key information about the sector, fields of work and pharmaceutical jobs for you here in a brief and clear format. You can also find out how TINTSCHL can help you find your dream job in the pharmaceutical industry. You can also find current pharmaceutical job vacancies here.

The pharmaceutical industry

As a key sector of our healthcare system, the pharmaceutical industry not only ensures access to high-quality medicines, but as one of the most research-intensive industries in Germany, it is also a major driver of medical progress. The products of the pharmaceutical industry include a wide variety of medicines for humans and animals, including vaccines, diagnostic preparations and blood preparations, in addition to finished medicinal products. The so-called research-based pharmaceutical companies research and develop new active ingredients and dosage forms; in addition, there are the manufacturers of so-called generics, most of which do not conduct any research but use active ingredients that have already been developed. In addition to the largest German pharmaceutical companies such as Bayer, Merck and Boehringer, numerous international "pharmaceutical giants" operate in Germany, such as Novartis, Roche, Sanofi-Aventis, Pfizer, AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline. The pharmaceutical industry also includes around 20,000 pharmacies in Germany.

Very good employment opportunities

Germany is an established location for pharmaceutical research, development and production due to its infrastructure and location, the growing healthcare market and a very well-trained workforce. Jobs in the German pharmaceutical industry are highly sought-after, as they offer very good prospects for the future, excellent development opportunities and, in some cases, above-average pay - the more (highly) qualified, the better.

Pharmaceutical jobs: fields of work, requirements and typical professions

The largest fields of activity for members of the pharmaceutical professions are in pharmacies on one hand, but to a significant extent also in pharmaceutical companies, which offer jobs in a wide variety of areas. In addition, research and testing facilities as well as health insurance companies are always in need of pharmaceutical specialists.

A possible entry point, but not an absolute prerequisite, is a degree, traditionally in pharmacy. Other fields of study also qualify for a job in the pharmaceutical industry, such as clinical research (e.g. with a focus on drug testing and approval), pharmaceutical and genetic engineering or chemistry, chemical engineering, biology or biotechnology or medicine.

Graduates of a relevant training course are also sought after in the industry. You can train as a pharmaceutical-technical assistant at vocational colleges; dual vocational training leads to the job titles of pharmaceutical technician and pharmaceutical-commercial employee. Once you have completed your training, you can also pursue further training, e.g. as a pharmaceutical sales representative and pharmaceutical consultant.
